Bang the Drum

Bangthedrum.co.uk is a new music website for Manchester that promises to give a voice to the people that matter – the music fans.

Bangthedrum.co.uk has two main aims:

  1. To shine the spotlight on the fantastically talented musicians and bands playing or releasing music in the region
  2. To give music fans a chance to share their passion

At its simplest, Bangthedrum.co.uk will be THE site to visit for information about the city’s music scene.

It will focus on the bright young (and not so young) things playing in the region’s pubs and clubs who we believe are being starved of the recognition they deserve.

Users will be able to read reviews of gigs and new releases, keep up to date with the latest news, listen to fresh tunes and demos and watch original video material.

They will also be able to plan ahead with our monthly gig guide and listen to tracks from the acts visiting the region on the accompanying playlist.

All of this is already available at our current site, CityLifers.co.uk, but we are working on a bigger and better version - Bangthedrum.co.uk.

We just need a bit of funding to help support this development stage and pay to publicise the launch.

The new site, which we hope to launch in September, will put a greater emphasis on the most unique selling point of the current site - its contributors.

We have around 30 writers regularly posting articles, but we want to open this opportunity up to more of our readers.

Anyone with a real passion for music will be given the chance to ‘bang the drum’, either by writing reviews of gigs or new releases.

We believe that passion is the most important quality in any writer, but will also give eager contributors plenty of tips and advice on how to construct articles, should they require it.

Over the past year, we have been busy building up a good list of contacts in the local music scene, which means that we can organise tickets to review the city’s best gigs and offer access to new music before it is released.

All we need is a steady supply of reviewers to ‘bang the drum’, ensuring that the smaller local venues and the acts that play in them are given the exposure they deserve – coverage that the local media and national music press is failing to deliver.

The ultimate aim is to open up a direct link between the bands and their fans, creating a social networking site for musicians and music fans.

In the future, we also hope to get the opportunity to reward our reviewers for their efforts with prizes and free gifts.

We are also working on a plan to introduce ‘points per click’, which reviewers will be able to use to get money off tickets and music at participating venues.

The site could also feature an online market, where members will be able to trade music-related items, as well as a forum/portal to help hook bands up with new musicians, gigs or management.

Amount applied for: ££4,000-£10,000

Today I finished off a new website for Kaya gallery. A client I originally built a site for hos gallery in Plymouth. Due to the great success of his Barbican based gallery Norman Holmes (gallery owner) has spread his wings to Totnes, opening a brand new gallery at 84 Hight Street, he needed a dedicated website for his new business so we split his orginal site into two sections, one for Plymouth and the other for Totnes.

Visit http://www.kayagallery.co.uk and chose either Plymouth or Totnes.

This afternoon i've been out busy in my other roll as Salcombe Lifeboats Press Officer. I've just been down to see Jason Pendlebury-jackson (area RNLI lifeguard manager) at his Bantham base with new gazette reporter Ben Walker. We took Ben down there to meet Jason and his companions who will be undertaking a charity surf ski paddle from Blackpool Sands to Tregantle in Cornwall in September. They aim to raise money for both the RNLI and the Bantham Lifesavers Club.

I'll be posting full details on the Salcombe Lifeboat Website soon, where you'll be able to leave an online donation. For a detailed map of the South Hams RNLI coverage, please visit this link.

Todays Report

Ok, so 1ft of swell at 8 seconds. Nothing much to write home about here, but look at those offshore winds, they might hold it up a bit and there is a chance of a waist high wave at the low tide spots. A North Atlantic low pressure system means the north coast should be picking up a decent wave, but it's not quite powerful enough to reach all the way around to us here in South Devon. This swell will build throughout the day but going into Sunday the winds will shift on shore. Best bet is to head down at lunchime today and enjoy a small wave, or get on it tomorrow and hope the winds stay light enough not to blow out what little swell there is.

Between myself and Jack Kirby from www.southdevonsurf.co.uk we'll be bringing you a live eye ball surf report from the South Devon coast just after 3pm every Saturday. Tune into BBC radio Devon every Saturday afternoon to find out exactly what's happening along our stretch of coastline. We'll tell you what Magic Sea Weed can't.

Todays Report

Well it's all about the sunshine this weekend, with the swell dropping righ off and high pressure dominating. It's looking like that could be the theme for the rest of the week, with potentially a small wave showing up at Bantham on Monday.

Time to kick back, enjoy the world cup and maybe make it down to Salcombe for the music festival. If you are out on the beaches remember to cover up in this sun.

I'm sure there'll be plenty of people out enjoying other activities on the water while the sea is flat. If you're swimming please stick to the lifeguarded beaches and obey the flags, for those kayaking, paddle boarding or out on boats please tell others where you're going, spot the dangers, wear a lifejacket and take a VHF radio to raise the alarm if you do get into trouble.

There's loads of sea safety information available on the RNLI website rnli.org.uk/shorething
